The Agarwals — also spelled Agrawal or Aggarwal — are one of the most prominent mercantile communities of the Indian subcontinent. Part of the broader Bania (Vaishya) trading order and closely tied to the wider Marwari business diaspora, they have for generations been associated with commerce, banking and industry.
What makes the community distinctive is not any single business it dominates, but a shared instinct: a comfort with risk, an obsession with accounts, and a deeply held belief that capital is meant to circulate and create more capital.
The legend of Agrasen and Agroha
Community tradition traces the Agarwals to Maharaja Agrasen, the legendary king of Agroha, a city in present-day Haryana. Agrasen is remembered as a just and prosperous ruler who is said to have favoured trade and republican values over war.
The most enduring story is the custom of the brick and the coin: whenever a new family settled in Agroha, every existing household would give them one brick and one silver coin. The bricks built a home; the coins seeded a business. No family ever started from zero.
